Merdeka Square is one of the most historically significant landmarks in Malaysia. At midnight on 31 August 1957, the British flag was lowered here for the final time, marking the end of British colonial rule. Each year on 31 August, Malaysians gather at this iconic square to celebrate the nation’s Independence Day.

Located beside the Royal Selangor Club, Merdeka Square was formerly known as the Selangor Club Padang. For many years, it served as a sporting field for cricket, hockey, and rugby matches, reflecting the country’s colonial past.

A Historic Space with Modern Facilities

In the mid-1990s, the area underwent redevelopment to include an underground car park as well as a shopping and dining complex, while preserving the open field above. Today, the padang remains an important public space, occasionally hosting cricket matches and national events.

At the southern end of Merdeka Square stands one of the tallest flagpoles in the world, flying the Malaysian national flag. The base of the flagpole is surrounded by a small landscaped garden, providing a pleasant and symbolic focal point for visitors.

Accessibility and Visitor Experience

Merdeka Square features wide open spaces, flat grassy areas, and paved walkways around the perimeter, making it relatively accessible for wheelchair users and visitors with mobility needs. Surrounding streets and nearby heritage buildings allow visitors to enjoy the historic atmosphere with minimal physical barriers.

Every third Saturday of the month, from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm, performances by the Malaysian Armed Forces Band and the Royal Malaysia Police Band take place at the square, offering visitors a unique cultural experience in a historic setting.

For wheelchair users, seniors, or travelers with mobility needs, accessible transportation is highly recommended when visiting Merdeka Square.
